Help with a Forename
« on: Thursday 09 April 20 00:15 BST (UK) »
Hi

Thanks to the wonderful help on here I'm now back to the Grandparents of my Lichelade ancestor. Christopher Lichelade left a Will dated 1558, but I can't figure out what his wife is called - Bolas is what it looks like to me, but I'm not sure

Thankyou in advance

Yes, it looks a bit like that to me too.  However, I could only find one mention of that name when I surfed and it's a man's name.

Here's the url and there are two lists ;  one for boys and one for girls names.

I read the name as Skolas, perhaps a derivative of the name Scholastica.

Is it possible to post a higher resolution image of the piece?  I think I can see a couple of linking lines but when I try to enlarge this image it gets too pixelated to read, a jpeg file would be good for my vector graphics programme where I could enlarge it and play around with it including sharpening the image which may show the apparent linking strokes better.

We could do with a larger snippet to compare letters, but I'm with Bookbox on this one - Skolas gets my vote.

Hi Everyone and thankyou

I have to agree it does look like Skolas but I have included a section of the Will for comparison

I have enlarged the original name and both sharpened it and added a background shade to try and eliminate the glare fading of the thin pen strokes.  I've also tried to follow the pen strokes in a red line overlay and cyan where I'm not sure if the shape is part of the name or just a squiggle.

I have to say I'm not seeing Skolas though at the moment but I can't think what else it might be at the moment.
