Wolstanton and Burslem Workhouse 415 - Bourne Family
« on: Thursday 09 April 20 19:03 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have experience of accessing records for Chell Wolstanton and Burslem Poor law union workhouse especially admission/discharge? In the 1861 census Thomas and Joseph are listed as scholars / inmates aged 12 and 7 respectively. I believe they are the sons of Thomas Bourne and Susannah Rowley Ford. I believe Thomas abandoned his  family, changed his name to Burn and remarried. I am trying to find earlier and later traces for the boys as well confirmation Thomas Bourne or Susannah admitted them to the workhouse. I can see there are documents at the National Archives and Stoke on Trent "gateway to the past" but each is closed currently. I am looking for insights of anyone who has trod this path before

Many thanks Tony

Checking with the GRO Index (which is free, just have to register)

Checking for Thomas BOURNE aged 12 - 1861 census =c1849

and Joseph BOURNE - aged 7 - 1861 census =c1854

----

BOURNE Joseph - mother's maiden name: FORD

GRO Reference, 1854 M Quarter in WOLSTANTON Volume 06B Page 87

---

(this is the nearest)

BOURNE Thomas - mother's maiden name: FORD

GRO Reference: 1850 J Quarter in WOLSTANTON AND BURSLEM UNION - Volume 17 Page 359

This is the 1851 census

Thomas - aged 23, Potter Slife? Maker born Manchester, Lancashire

Thank you Capetown

I have sent for these birth records. The 1851 census is interesting because the FindMyPast version says Thomas was 0 years old (10 months old) - which then fits - on the ancestry image it looks like 10 months but is recorded as 10 years. The errors in the surname transcription also makes it harder to find matches for the family but I am confident the FindMyPast version is correct and this is them

I have not yet found a good match for Thomas born ~1828 in Manchester. From the marriage certificate Thomas's father is Thomas (born ~1800-1810)

Thank you

Going through slowly

Here's

BOURNE Henry - Mother's Maiden name: FORD

GRO Reference: 1852, J Quarter in WOLSTANTON Volume 06B Page 75

Can see a Henry BOURNE - lodger aged 28, EWare Squeezer - born Staffs, Burslem 1881, Census - Burslem.

Assume you have seen the Public Members Tree on Ancestry with the family and various marriage certificates etc.

Hi Capetown

Yes i am in contact with the author of those trees and we are working together because Thomas Bourne / Burns had three marriages and we are descended from different marriages! The first marriage with Susannah gives us the best opportunity to find Thomas before he moves and changes his name.

There is also a death record for Henry in 1854 so it is very interesting to think he was alive in 1881. i'll certainly explore that

Thank you
