Thomas McDermott Date of Death and Burial
« on: Monday 13 April 20 15:29 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am wondering if anyone can help me or point me in the right direction please. I am researching my 2 x G Grandfather Thomas McDermott born in Kilkeeran, Roscommon in Ireland around 1829. Thomas joined the British Army in 1846 and served in India and Cape Colony before being discharged as a Chelsea out-pensioner in 1868. I am seeking information in relation to his death and burial. According to the 1911 census, he 82 years old and living with his daughter in East Ham, London, but I have not been able to nail down his date of death or location of his burial. He was a Roman Catholic so I am assuming it will in a local R.C Church, but I have failed to find a candidate match in the registry of deaths for around this time frame. Any help or advice gratefully received. Stephen

Nothing obvious is there.  Do you now where his wife was buried?  He could be with her or have popped back to Ireland  :-\

Hi Milliepede,  Intriguing isn't it!

His wife was Elizabeth (nee Webber) originally from West Worlington and a Devon farming family. She married Thomas in 1861 (against the approval of her family apparently) She was 56 in 1891 and is living with Thomas in East Ham (according to the census). I have not found either of them on the 1901 census either, but Thomas obviously survives her as he is a widower in 1911.

He was an army pensioner, does the army know when he died?

Just a word of warning. There are trees on Anc* giving details of Thomas's son Thomas born 1862 in Kent as dying in 1941--he did not. This is Thomas Paul McDermott born 1862 West Ham the son of a Thomas McDermott and Sarah Ibbotson.
With regard to the deaths of Thomas senior and Elizabeth I believe they died in the West Ham registration district., Elizabeth in 1892 and Thomas in 1916. However their ages don't match up but if I was abetting man I would plump for them.
