Hi
In 1823 my fourth great grandfather graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons. We are fortunate to have his original graduation certificate. He went on to work in Burma and then spent a majority of the rest of his life in India before returning to Dublin where he was born and married and had two children - John Cornwall McGaveston and Charles Wynn McGaveston. He doesn't appear to follow Irish naming traditions.
He was sponsored to be a surgeon by Charles Watkin Williams-Wynn (CWWW) and when my ancestor completed his training was sponsored to the Honorary East India Company (HEIC) by Charles again.
1. Does anyone know how people came to be sponsored to be surgeons?
2. Can anyone suggest why CWWW would sponsor someone in Dublin to be a surgeon in London?
3. We have not been able to establish any sort of family connection
My ancestors parents were Nicholas McGaveston and Rose Higgins. Nicholas was born around 1753 and died in 1823 in Dublin. We have almost no details about Rose except her marriage. One of Nicholas other children Mary McGaveston married Mathew Hilton who was a land steward for the Marquess of Ormonde. It seems our family was well to do or connected but we have no idea how to CWWW.
