Where is Garly
« on: Thursday 16 April 20 10:47 BST (UK) »
Trying to prove / disprove if this burial is for one of my ancestors. This side of my family all came from the Coquet Valley and lived and worked on farms in the valley. I have been able to find the locations of the farms mentioned in the church records for their births, marriages and deaths but this one has stumped me. The register entry reads 'John Readhead of Garly. Aqua Demersus' I have attached an image of the entry.

All comments gratefully received.

There is a 'Garely Side' to the south of Rothbury on this map https://communities.northumberland.gov.uk/006946FS.htm

The B 6342 heading south out of Rothbury is called Garleigh Road.

Many thanks JenB -- ties in to nearby farms where the family were over the years.

The burial entry ended with the phrase 'aqua demersus' -- I have found an entry in the Newcastle Courant dated 12 May 1770 which explains 'Tuesday, as Mr John Readhead, of Garley, near Rothbury, was returning from Tosson races, in crossing a brook, he fell off his horse, and was drowned'

Possibly had a few drinks at the races with his friends??

My father quite often took me walking in the Garleigh Moor/Lordenshaw area back in the early 60's. We didn't have a car so got the bus out from Newcastle to Rothbury and did a loop out through Whitton and Whitton Dene (and possibly onto the Simonsides, though that may be a memory from later walks) then back by Lordenshaw and Garleigh to see the standing stone and cup and ring markings. I have a picture of the moors round there in my living room

Garleigh Moor is on the B6342 leaving Rothbury. Garleigh rises steeply to about 260 m above Whitton and Tosson from the dip in the road at Whitton Burn. It was on the toll road with the Pike and Wagtail to the east side and Lordenshaws, Morrelhirst and Blagdon Burn on the west side then the road reaches Forestburn Gate (on the old toll road) and Blue Burn where I think some Readheads lived in 1770s
