Census Dodgers
« on: Thursday 16 April 20 13:00 BST (UK) »
Maybe the Fife forum isnt the right place for this but I was wondering if anyone else has a family group that appear to have dodged or not been recorded in any census records?

I have Hugh McKenna probably born in Ireland married Catherine Carlan ( also probably born in Ireland) in Ayr in 1833. I have Hughs death record in Ballingry in 1873 and present was his son in law Michael Reynolds. He was a widower so Catherine died before him.

I cant find Hugh or his family or kids ( Elizabeth 1840 Kilmadock / Doune, Hugh 1843 Stirling and John 1848 Falkirk) in any census records from 1841 to 1871.

Its a bit weird

There are some Fife parish census records that are lost/destroyed, this could explain things?

https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/research/guides/census-records/1841-census#Missing

EDIT: This would obviously only apply to 1841.

I've checked A*cestry and there seems to be another family with a Hugh and Catherine McKenna living in Govan, Glasgow for a period of time, but the places of birth don't match up.

Elizabeth married in 1866 in Cowdenbeath and her mother was deceased by then.

I guess "Sally" on the 1841 is Sarah:
Sarah Mcanna
Marriage Date:
4 Dec 1853

Marriage Place:
Carnock,Fife,Scotland

Spouse:
 Francis Clark

Elizabeth seems to be with them in Carnock 1861.

That is even more interesting Maureen as Francis Clark was a witness at the wedding of Michael Reynolds ( Hughs son in law and informant at his death) and Elizabeth McKenna

They really are tough to find!

Do you know if the two sons (Hugh and John) survived?
