McAsey/McAssey
« on: Friday 17 April 20 01:01 BST (UK) »
I am looking for a birth date and parents names plus marriage date and possible relatives for Ellen McAsey. Ellen was born about 1830 in Ballyellen, County Carlow. She married Thomas Conway and their son Thomas was born on the 29th December, 1861. He was followed by John in 1864 and James in 1867. Ellen died in Balleyellen on the 30th October 1884 and Thomas died on the 22nd May 1891 also in Balleyellen.

Kind Regards

Hi,
Ballyellen would be parish of Dunleckney/Bagenalstown.

Link below to full transcription of baptisms in the parish from 1821 to 1857.
Had a quick look and no Ellen McAsey from Ballyellen but a few other McAssey baptisms so could have missed it.
http://www.igp-web.com/Carlow/Dunleckney_index.htm

Might be worthwhile checking either Goresbridge or Borris records as well although should be in Bagenalstown Parish I would imagine

Hi,
I found a Martha Mcasey in the tithe records in 1825. The only Mcasey listed in County Carlow.
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?surname=mcasey&firstname=&county=Carlow&parish=&townland=&search=Search
This is where she was.....
https://www.townlands.ie/carlow/dunleckny/
This is Ballyellin
https://www.townlands.ie/carlow/idrone-east/ballyellin/ballyellin/ballyellin-and-tomdarragh/
Very close to each other.

This is John's Baptism bottom entry 10th April 1864.
https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634459#page/76/mode/1up
He married Bridget Breen.

Some where in here is James' Baptism
https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634459#page/90/mode/1up

Did James Conway b 1867 go to the USA?
I see he was present at the death of his Father Thomas.
There is a ship record same birth year as James and arrival in USA in 1892.

Going back further, I did look in 3 sites for the marriage of Ellen and Thomas.
The earliest record is the Martha Mcasey one.

Sorry but you will have to look in the Registers on line...……. this link.
https://registers.nli.ie/

Not much help sorry.
Maggsie

Thanks to both Noland01 and Maggsie your help is much appreciated. You need X-ray vision to look at some of those records. I notice on the baptism record for John that Ellen is recorded as Eleanora. John had twin daughters named Ellen and Honoria (Nora). Wondering if the girls names were a combination of the name Eleanora. I don’t have any information on James Conway.
Someone sent me a possible birth for a Ellen McAsey born in 1830 and baptised on the 29th January,1830. Parents listed as Thomas McAsey and Catherine Tallan. I also made contact last week with a McAsey who shares DNA with me and is classed as a 4th to 6th cousin. His ancestor was a
Thomas McAsey born about 1812 and immigrated to Melbourne, Australia in 1855. We are going to try and work out where  our connection is on the McAsey line.

Kind Regards

Reading back over your opening post,have you anything to indicate that Ellen was born in Ballyellin ?
Where was the January 1830 baptism ?
Her death entry indicates a birth year c.1830 but wonder how accurate that might be.Thomas is 62 on death entry so similar birth year ie 1829

See an Ellen McAsey born/baptised Sept.1836 to a John McAsey and Kitty Treacy.Address given as Ballywilliamroe. Bagenalstown.
Also see a few McAsey baptisms in register from Lorum and other townlands that would be  close enough to Ballyellin.

Hi Carol

Ellen's baptism entry (assuming its the correct one) looks likely to be in Carlow town.

Ballyellin is closer to Goresbridge  village(parish of Goresbridge and Paulstown) and to Borris village (parish of Borris) than it is to Bagenalstown or Ballinkillen  where the churches in Dunleckney/Bagenalstown parish are located.
All are diocese of Kildare and Leighlin.

Ballyellin is right beside Goresbridge village so assume they moved to there on marriage.

Thomas Conway gives Goresbridge as address on marriage in 1892;

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1892/10628/5872205.pdf

Found that Ellen McAsey baptism on 29th January 1830.Address is given as Tullow Street, Carlow Town.

https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634424#page/93/mode/1up

All that is getting you no further though.Would think perhaps look again at Bagenalstown/Dunleckney register and maybe Borris and Paulstown/Goresbridge for birth and marriage for Ellen and Thomas.
Not saying the Ellen baptised in Carlow is not "your" Ellen but chances are that she would have been born closer to Ballyellin than Carlow Town or then again maybe she/her family moved before or after her marriage.

Decided to have another look at this tonight so;

Thomas Conway and Anne Carroll;
Marriage;
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1892/10628/5872205.pdf
1901 census
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Kilkenny/Goresbridge/Grange_Lower/1452976/

Cant seem to find the family in 1911.

John Conway and Brigid Breen;
Marriage;
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1889/10743/5917515.pdf
Census 1901;
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Carlow/Ballyellin/Ballyellin_and_Tomdarragh/1039274/

And again in 1911;
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Carlow/Ballyellen/Ballyellen_and_Tomdarragh/309553/

Did both families move/emigrate as no likely death entry's for either Conway brother or their respective spouses.Last child I could see on civil reg. site for Thomas and Anne was Catherine registered as being born Lower Grange,Goresbridge on 3rd June 1904.

As regards Ellen McAsey;see a baptism of an Eleanor to an Andrew McAsey and Margaret Bryan on 27/09/1840 in Dunleckney records.Address given as Ballinkillen.Siblings Mary baptised Sept. 1836 and Margaret Nov. 1838
