Isaac Pyne of Wellington
« on: Monday 20 April 20 12:13 BST (UK) »
After many years of research on my GGG Grandfather Isaac Pyne, born c 1779, who was married firstly to Mary Snook and then Mary Wale. I now know that he was not the son of John Pyne and Grace Palmer.  There was an older Isaac Pyne in Wellington  married to Joan Chorley and he was the son of John and Grace. I know this from my research and also another researcher who has this Isaac Pyne in their tree.  Isaac Pyne born c 1779 is now parentless once again. Does anyone have him in their tree or have any ideas about who his parents might have been?

There is one born 21 Oct 1780 Wellington belonging to Richard and Joan have you ruled him out.
Quaker birth register.

Sorry that one is Payne not Pyne but maybe still a possibility.

Have you looked at wills? There are not a lot of local wills surviving for Somerset, but PCC wills (Prerogative Court of Canterbury) survive.

These are for Wellington and nearby. There are more if you extend the radius to 10 or 15 miles.

John Pyne, of Wellington, 1650
Robert Pyne, of Wellington, weaver, 1653
Robert Pyne, of Wellington, serge maker, 1750
Nathaniel Pyne, of West Buckland, serge maker, 1762
Robert Pyne, of Wellington, wheelwright, 1819

You can search in TNA Discovery and read them if you have an Ancestry subscription.

Kellogg/Kelhog - Essex, Cambs

I also thought that Isaac Payne might be a possibility until I found his tree on Ancestry and he appears to marry in Yorkshire and die in London.  My Isaac married in 1805 and 1809 in Wellington and died in Taunton in 1849. I have not searched Ancestry wills but as I am a member I will certainly do so.

Thank you for that information.  It is confusing there being two Isaac Pynes.  The one who was born in 1771 was married to Joan Chorley and was the son of John Pyne, yeoman ,and Grace Palmer. It was interestimg that both Pyne and Payne were being used.  I know, because I checked this Isaac out ,that he was illiterate.  Whether this had anything to do with spelling differences I don't know. My Isaac Pyne was a carpenter and also literate so perhaps he was more aware of the spelling.

Don't have access to that record, but the one in WO 116 is free on TNA website using their image viewer (but no they haven't yet opened up all those paywalled records!)

Seems to say Isaac Pyne was a Carpenter.
Age would not match your Isaac's age on death. But doesn't match the other one on that basis? The Isaac Pyne with Joan in 1841 was a Sawyer, age on death/burial in October 1845 was 78. And the marriage to Joan was in 1794 when the Guardsman was in service.

Your Isaac and second Mary had children baptized at the Lower Meeting House, Wellington?
Including a Henry Hall Palmer Pyne in 1820.

It's also been pointed out that an Abraham Pyne had a daughter called Grace Palmer baptized there in 1801
And see this thread

John Pyne and Grace Palmer married 7 Aug 1769, at Langford Budville.

Estate Duty Wills include a Grace Pyne of Wellington, proved at Wells, 1808

We can see the death duty register entry for Grace on TNA image viewer. But with their "watermarked" images! As said, they have not so far made good on their promise to open these records up during the lockdown.
Executor is Isaac Pyne. Legatee daughter Mary?

The estate duty wills list for 1812-57 includes a Henry Pyne, Carpenter, of Wellington, in 1814 (is he the 53 year old buried Dec 1813, a bit young)

The Isaac Pyne who was married to Joan Chorley was actually the brother of Abraham who had daughter Grace Palmer Pyne.  Their parents were John Pyne and Grace Palmer. I mistakenly thought that because my Isaac had a som Henry Hall Palmer Pyne that his parents were John and Grace. I have a copy of the will of a Grace Palmer with daughter Mary and executor Isaac Pyne. I did not know that a Grace Pyne was connected to the will of a John Pyne so seemingly these are John Pyne and GracePalmer . There was another  Grace married to a Charles Pyne ,who had a daughter Mary from her first marriage to Thomas Bishop.  Which Isaac was mentioned I  have always wondered and what his connection to Grace was. I wonder if literacy made any difference in those days to carrying out the task of executor as my Isaac was literate and the one married to Joan Chorley not.
