William Johnston/ Helen Poland Drumgooland, Down, Ireland
« on: Wednesday 22 April 20 12:56 BST (UK) »
Hi hope someone can help on the following;

I am trying to trace the parents and family of my husbands grandfather William Johnson born  8 May 1831 in think in  Knockbreda, Down, Ireland.  He married a Helen Polland 25 November 1853 in Drumgooland.  I know that William moved to Kilwinning in Scotland between 1854 & 1856.

I do not know how to search Irish records but can find information on William in Scotlands People, so any help on Irish records would be much appreciated.

Regards

I have downloaded the marriage certificate for William Johnston and Ellen McPoland. If he married in 1853  I assume he would have been born prior to 1837.
The marriage certificate states his father was also a William Johnston, so I have looked to see if I can find William Johnston(snr)'s wife, (i.e. the mother of William Johnston who was married in 1853), but have not had much luck, it looks like the site only starts in 1845.  Could anyone point me in the right direction please!!!

Civil registration of non-Catholic marriages only started in 1845 (from 1864 for Catholic marriages) so there won't be marriage registrations before 1845. Both William & Ellen are listed as 'of age' so supposedly age 21 or older. Ellen is the more usual form of the name in Ireland whilst Helen used often in Scotland.

Did you have to be 21 before you got married in the 1850's?  If so William must have been born around 1832.

If so is there no way I can find out who William Johnston's mother was?

Thank you so for helping me with this.

They did not have to be 21 to marry but the marriage entry indicates they were both of full age.

You said in your first post...

William Johnson born  8 May 1831 in think in  Knockbreda, Down, Ireland.

That date must have come from somewhere?

In 1861 William said he was aged 30, aged 40 in 1871, and it was only in 1881 that he lost a few years.  If he died in Scotland then his parents should be named on the death registration if the informant knew the names.

Hi Debra

Thanks for getting back to me.

This is where it gets confusing, the dates I have 8 May 1831 may be for the wrong William Johnson.

That William Johnson's father was called Robert Johnston not William Johnston, so I must have been given some incorrect information somewhere along the line.

Hi Debra

I have found this on you-tube  Not sure if Drumgullane and Drumgooland are the same place, but everything else seams to match up.

Thank you for your help on this, any more info you can provide would be welcome.
