Place name in Knoydart, 1935
« on: Wednesday 22 April 20 13:26 BST (UK) »
I have a death register for a relative, Janet MacInnes, who died in what looks like TORREE in Knoydart in 1935.
I can't find any mention of Torree on internet searches and I'm hoping someone can confirm I'm reading the article correctly.
I suppose it could refer to a house name rather than a place name but obviously I can't confirm either.
Can anyone confirm or come up with an alternative?
Many thanks.

James

Could it be Inverie?

Can you scan the death certificate and post the part with the place name here so we can all have a look at it?

Forfarian - as you can see Gadget has beaten me to it with the scan.
I can't imagine it being anything other than Torree - I think I may have to obtain an ordnance survey map and peruse it with a magnifying glass!

I'd go with Tòrr Réidh, which would sound quite like Torree if anglicised.

It's still there https://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NM7799 and click on the map to enlarge it.

Hi,

Valuation Rolls for 1935 Invernesshire, Glenelg Parish, has a John MacInnes as the Tenant of House and Garden "Torrinree".  Could this be the location you are looking for?

If you look on the map to which Gadget supplied the link in Reply #4 above, you will see that Torranrie is right next to Tòrr Réidh.

Thanks to everyone who responded.
I now don't think there is any doubt that it is Tòrr Réidh which, like so many places in Scotland, has been anglicised to Torree.
Makes perfect sense when I think about it!
Thanks all!

James
