Mclean's Spey Bay
« on: Thursday 23 April 20 06:42 BST (UK) »
Looking for some people in Spey Bay Area around World War 2.

These were members of a WW2 Auxuilary unit Patrol from Spey Bay and the names came from the National Archives.  Unable to find much details, perhaps the Mclean's are all related?

J   Mclean
F   Mclean
J   Mclean
Joseph?   Robertson
T F   Tocher (may be F Tocher)
Charles   Young

Any help would be great

Hi EV

Yes, it's me that does the research for the site and put that info in.  I am revising the records as we have a new website coming and wanted more up to date info.

I have 288 names across Aberdeenshire, so trying to focus in on small areas first (Spey Bay)

Regards

Alan

From the Valuation Rolls(1940) and BMD records on Scotlandspeople I'm wondering if L. Cochrane is
Lewis Greig Cochrane(1899 - 1984) ?
Perhaps you have this already ?

I assume that you have checked Scotland's People, but with only initials to go on that could be difficult. If they died at Spey Bay their deaths would be registered in Bellie, or if they went into hospital possiblly Rathven or Elgin or even Aberdeen.

Have you had a good rake about in LIBINDX http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp ?

Were these men members of something like the Home Guard rather than on active service overseas? In which case they wouldn't be on a local war memorial or in the CWGC web site?

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Hi Forfarian

Yes, been using Scotlands People, British Newspaper Archive etc.

Do a search for Scotland, then county, then parish.  A lot of the people appear to have been farmers, if they were farm workers, then they would typically move about.

Did have a rake in LIBINX but not the best of search engines.

The Auxiliary units were a secret organisation, although some were in the home guard they had to sign official secrets act and were never formally recognized, it's only in past six or so years any remaining members could parade at the cenotaph in London.

Not mentioned anywhere other than occasional news article
