Place name: Abbey, R.C. Parish of Golden & Kilfeacle. Any ideas?
« on: Wednesday 29 April 20 19:12 BST (UK) »
I have a very small DNA match with someone whose ancestors, Jeremiah Ryan and Alice Dwyer, came from the Catholic Parish of Golden and Kilfeacle. There are two baptism registrations (1834, 1836) that both record the location of the family as "Abbey." I have checked Google Maps and townlands.ie with no success. Askaboutireland.ie showed 19 Jeremiah Ryans in Griffith's who were living in the barony of Clanwilliam. Of these, there are two Jeremiahs who lived close to Golden. One was from the civil parish of Rlickmurry & Athassel who is definitely not the Jeremiah that I am looking for. The other Jeremiah is recorded in the civil parish of Kilfeacle which is a possibility. My DNA match wondered if "Abbey" might be close to Athassel Abbey but that lies outside the civil parish boundary of Kilfeacle. Any further suggestions as to the location of "Abbey" would be greatly appreciated!

The link to Irish Ancestors on the main page (at the bottom) of each parish is very handy for finding the names of places in the parish.

I checked the link and there is mention of Athassel North and Athassel South pertaining to the 1901 and 1911 censuses; these could be possibilities I suppose as they lie in the district electoral division of Thomastown which is not too far from Golden. Would those names have been in use in the 1830s?

I checked that out as well but there was nothing for Abbey. However, I will have to keep that link in mind for other searches. Thanks!

You have discounted this one I think but the place seems quite good. Why is he definitely the one you are not looking for? Have you found him in later records?

Griffiths Valuation has the same place - Jeremiah Ryan at Sergeant's Lot which is the one close to Athasselabbey

Is the other GV, Jermiah in Knocballynoe East, Kilfeacle parish where there are Dwyers also?
Also close to Athasselabbey.

It's Athasselabbey North and Athasselabby South. Which is one townland divided into two, and what could be better as a short name for Athasselabbey than Abbey.
