I don’t suppose anyone would be able to dig up details of Alexander’s first marriage?

Thank you.

Mother was definitely Rebecca, father not easily readable, he was baptised Dec 3rd 1854 in Oldland common, Bristol.

I have found an incoming passenger list in 1921 for a George Gay, b 1854, leaving Quebec for Bristol, England, so he possibly returned home for some reason. Country of intended residence is given as England. There is also a death for George Gay in 1927, age is a year out, in Bristol reg district.

It looks, therefore, as though he didn’t stay in Canada.

Hi,

Yes,  I was thinking the following was a possible. He seems to have had a quick trip to Canada, arriving May 15 and leaving July 24, 1921.

A Canadian passenger list on the ship Megantic May 15, 1921 from Liverpool to Quebec
George Gay, age 66, b. Bristol, timekeeper, is joining family, wife Mrs. Geo. Gay, 2468 Waverley St., Montreal, nearest relative sister Mrs. F. Phipps, 36 Dougola Rd., Horfield, Bristol.

In the 1920-21 Montreal Directories, a W.J. Rogers is listed at 2468 Waverley St., so fairly certain
that is him

And as you mentioned the UK Inward Passenger List on the same ship arriving Liverpool from Quebec on July 24, 1921.
George Gay. age 67. clerk, 36 Dougola Rd. Bristol, intended future residence England.

From the Bristol Church Burials, Feb. 25, 1927
Gay, George, age 72, 71 Ashley Down Rd. formerly of Bridge Yate.

The GRO Index has a birth Gay, George 1854 mother Goodnough in Keynsham vol 05C, page 676
Family search has marriage for George Jan 10, 1887 to Alice Short in Bedminster, his father is
Benjamin and her father is Rowland
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XT37-3K4

A possible at Find A Grave, with parents Benjamin and Rebecca in Wick Gloucestershire.
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/150488479#

There should be a voyage for him between 1913 and 1921 back to the UK, but I'm not finding
that but they can be hit and miss sometimes.

DB, You're welcome :)

Thank you for all this. It’s a strange one - George sails to Montreal, stays a short while, leaves wife and daughter there to join other family members - and then sails back, never to return again.

I did see the grave on findagrave a while back and wondered why George wasn’t buried with his wife, but I hadn’t realised at that point that Alice had died in Canada after remarrying.

Did you have any luck with Alexander Mearns first marriage?
