West Bromwich - Cordley Colliery Co
« on: Sunday 10 May 20 11:12 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help me discover the origin of this colliery in West Bromwich.

I believe it was a working coal mine in 1880 - http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~cmhrc/genealogy/list80.htm

I have been told that "A 1929 publication published by HMSO 'Catalogue of Plans of Abandoned Mines Vol. 2', states that Cordley Colliery was abandoned on 25th June 1881."

There is a Cordley Street in West Bromwich which, I imagine, helps locate it.  Looking at an old (abt 1885) map  -  https://maps.nls.uk/view/101585824 - it was in the area called 'Guns Village' and is shown as disused.

In particular I am curious about – when did it open, and by whom

CORDLEY is a family name and I am trying to identify if there is a connection to this unusual name which seems to originate from Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.  I cannot locate any Cordley family in the West Bromwich area around that time...

I have posted this under Staffordshire, but perhaps this should be Warwickshire - please let me know and I will re-post..

Pam

There is a advert in  the Birmingham Daily Post 23 July 1881 for the sale of Colliery Plant and effects by the Cordley Colliery Company, at the Cordley Colliery, close to the Swan Village Station, West Bromwich.

"The History&Topography of Westbromwich, and Its Vicinity" By Joseph REEVES, 1836,  has in the Directory, W. and J. Bennitt, Cordley Colliery.

... and I have just found (findmypast) a notice dated April 1832 giving the names Joseph & Wm Bennitt for Cordley Colliery, stating that Coal Traders needed to have an 'Index' attached to their boats otherwise would not be loaded.  About another 30 Collieries are listed with owners.

So the Colliery is around in 1830 - but still intrigued by its name and origin....

Sadly, just before the Colliery closed:

Name:   Joseph Lee
Death Age:   24
Event Type:   Death
Birth Year:   abt 1855
Death Date:   17 Jan 1879
Death Place:   West Bromwich, Staffiord, England
Occupation:   Pikeman
Colliery:   Cordley
Owner:   Cordley Colliery Co
Notes:   Injured 4th Jan by fall of loose coal in a thick coal pit. Died this day.

But back to the start of the Colliery - why was it named Cordley Colliery  - and when did it start??

And today, there is a Cordley Street on the colliery site.

Interesting...   So perhaps the Colliery was named after the Coppice?  But I cannot find any Cordley family living in this area around 1830 or before.

Oh, for a map around 1800..

and interestingly, there is also a road named Coppice Street by the Colliery on the 1886 map. https://maps.nls.uk/view/115476115#zoom=5&lat=7544&lon=4165&layers=BT

on findmypast, there are articles about the sale of land in Cordley Coppice in 1850-1866 ish.

Does anyone know whether there is a digitised Tithe map of this area??
