WW1 "3rd Army Musketry School"
« on: Monday 11 May 20 22:55 BST (UK) »
Grateful if someone could assist me with information/location on the "3rd Army Musketry School" in WW1.

A soldier who was in the NZ Maori Pioneer Battalion, according to his military record, signed up to the 3rd Army Musketry School on 19 July 1918 and returned to his Battalion by 4 Auguust 1918.

At the time he was stationed in France.  Would his training at this school have been in France and if so where?  After returning to his Battalion what would his role be?

Thanks
TPB

Thanks Fisherman for this link - it is very interesting.
The period 19/7/1918 - 4/8/1918 doesn't seem long enough to have travelled to Kent, England and returned and attended a training course?

3rd Army Musketry School was one of many schools of instruction in France, 1st, 2nd and 4th Armies also had Musketry schools.  This one was at Fort Mahon Plage on the coast north of Abbeville.

The School of Musketry at Hythe, later the Small Arms School, was the Daddy establishment in UK.

Loose end - the primary role of the Musketry School was to train junior officers and soldiers to be regimental musketry instructors back in their own units.  The old term musketry had been retained retained covering small arms generally.
