A quick comment in relation to the questions in your last paragraph ...

Maybe look at the occupations of the fathers to see if either looks more likely - maybe occupations are given on children’s birth, marriage or death certificates. You might need to buy some credits for Scotland’s People. Also check Familysearch which is not bad for Scottish records.

If still alive, have you traced these families as far as the 1841/51 censuses to see where they were living and who with?

Think this is birth of John: John Lowry Sept.qtr.1841 Leeds - mother maiden name Johnson.

According to marriage and census John's wife was Mary Johnstone (not Margaret).

That took a couple of hours to write up because i didn't want to make a mistake but  Annette7 picked up a mistake. Yes her name was Mary  NOT Margaret.
Thanks for John's birth. I will order that when things go back to the new normal.

I have this as a possible as a Margaret Johnstone married a McBurnie.
A possible for 1841
SCT1841/644 Place: Glasgow -Lanarkshire
Address: Kelvin Street
JOHNSTON       James       M       55       Iron Moulder Journeyman
JOHNSTON       Hellen       F       55               Lanarkshire

They had 2 children that i have found.
26 March 1806 Troqueer Margaret d/o James Johnstone and Helen Hunter
22 of August 1809 Mary d/o James Johnstone and Helen Hunter

I have put a snip up of David McBurnie's Baptism.

The Scottish naming tradition is normally first son named after his paternal grandfather which would suggest John's father was a David Laurie.    First daughter named after her maternal grandmother which would in turn suggest Mary Johnstone's mother was named Mary Scott.

A marriage took place between a Robert Johnston and a Mary Scot on 19/7/1799 Dumfries.  Perhaps these were Mary Johnstone's parents and she herself born in Dumfries where she and John Laurie married.

Can you see where David was born on Post #4. The last bit is a bit hard to read.
Just found this in my Paper files.
1851 finds them at 6 Chatham Court Leeds, John, 40 is now a Fluff Dyer, born Scotland, Dumfries. John, Mary and David all have been put down as being born Dumfries. David is now a  Plasterer. Surname spelled Laurie

I am happy with the Children of John And Mary. Just need to sort out which John and Mary.
All the marriage certificates give John Laurie Dyer as Father.
