Nelson Harry Rowles - help needed
« on: Sunday 17 May 20 11:21 BST (UK) »
Nelson Harry Rowles was born on Sunday, 13th December 1896 at Chertsey the youngest son of Edward and Esther Rowles (née Cooper), a ‘Chimney Sweep’.

In the 1911 census he is age 15 and recorded as assisting his father in his chimney sweeping business. They are living at 1 Fox Lane, Chertsey.

There was a listing in the Surrey Times and Couty Express dated 17th March 1916 stating that Nelson Rowles appeared before a Tribunal presumably trying to defer his call-up. This would most likely have been instigated by his employer. His age was given as 19 and his occupation as ‘Chimney Sweep’.

He enlisted in the Royal Artillery on 9th March 1916. He gave his occupation as ‘Chimney Sweep’, and his address as 1 Fox Lane, Chertsey. He served at home until 15th March 1917 and was sent to France on 16th March 1917.  He was described as having black hair, brown eyes and a sallow complexion. He was only disciplined once and that was for being ‘late on parade’.

He served with the 198 Brigade R.F.A.. During 1918 198th Brigade was an Army Brigade R.F.A. and from 28th February 1918 to 30th March 1918 it was supporting the 14th Division of III Corps.

He was discharged on 19th February 1919.

In the ‘1939 Register’ he is living with his parents, Edward and Esther at ‘The Nest’, Green Road, Egham, Surrey. His occupation is given as ‘Chimney Sweep’.

He died on Tuesday, 9th October 1979, age 82.
His death certificate gives his last address as 83 Station Road, Chertsey, Surrey.

You would probably need the Surrey Herald or at a stretch the Woking News and Mail for an obituary, I don't think either are available online

I don't know where his parents were buried but they both died at Thorpe, Surrey.
His father Edward died 10.3.1943 at Thorpe and his mother Esther died 31.12.1943 at Thorpe.

Maybe he was buried with them  :-\

ADDED Have you tried Runnymede Council as they would administer Cemeterys at Thorpe & Chertsey
