Parents for James Little
« on: Monday 18 May 20 08:48 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I am hoping there may be some help with finding parents and siblings for James LITTLE, he was born in Essex in 1804.

James was transported on the Gideon in 1820.

Hope i haven't set a too hard task....and hopefully something can be found.

Regards

Cienna

Essex Baotism Index has four possible baptisms, none in 1804.

13 February 1803 Good Easter, parents Joseph and Sarah
5 June 1803 Writtle, parents John and Penelope
14 July 1805 Willingdale Doe, parents James and Eleanor
29 September 1805 Great Canfield, parents Charles and Elizabeth.

He was sentenced to 7 years for Larcency and that's all I can find.

Theses two appear to be on later census returns.

5 June 1803 Writtle, parents John and Penelope
14 July 1805 Willingdale Doe, parents James and Eleanor

On A….y but might be at Great Dunmow in 1841
James Little baptism 8/04/1804 Stansted Mountfitchet, St Mary Essex , John & Ann

Both possible?

13 February 1803 Good Easter, parents Joseph and Sarah
29 September 1805 Great Canfield, parents Charles and Elizabeth.

Thank you Emeltom and Colin, for your help, this leaves me to think about which one he may have been, he was 19 when he was transported and he died in May 1853 at age 48 years so could he be the born in 1805.....will keep searching and if he is the 1805 James are there any siblings and a surname for his mother before her marriage?

Kind Regards

Cienna

You say he was transported in 1820, so he would have been 16, not 19?  Not trying to pick holes, but as we are looking for births the ages are important.

Somehow Cienna needs to find out some more facts about the crime. Whereabouts in Essex did it happen?
James was transported on the Guildford.

Ah the Guildford .. I was struggling to find any ship called Gideon.
I have looked at newspaper report for 1819 / 20, but can't find anything mentioned. He was convicted for larceny at lent Assize in Chelmsford (4 Mar 1820). He was on a prison hulk Laurel at Portsmouth on 1 May 1820. Age shown then as 16. If he hadn't yet had his birthday he could have been born in latter half of  1803.

There's a James Little of Great Canfield married an Abigail Kettley in Great Dunmow in 1828. Haven't found them on a census yet to check his age.

Thank you to all whom have replied, this what I have on James LITTLE;

Name:
Little, James

Record Type:
Convicts

Departure date:
14 May 1820

Departure port:
Portsmouth

Ship:
Guildford

Voyage number:
9

Apparently he had stolen a pig from the farmer he was working for and was transported to Van Diemans Land.

James was born in Essex and he was 48 when he died in 1853, if that is correct that would make him born in 1804-1805.

Cienna.
