There is a death of a Samuel registered in Westminster
March 1845 Westminster 1 385
Oakes, Samuel
age 52

But the Tower of London is not in Westminster.

Is there any way to discover how or why my 4x G Grandfather died at the Tower of London?

Samuel Oakes
Born Broseley Shropshire 1796
Died Tower of London 16 Jan 1845

on the 1841 census http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=GBC/1841/0008887391 as a Waterman with wife Sarah who has also disappeared by 1851

1841: Samuel Oakes (born Shropshire) abt 1798 (Waterman) was living in Salt House, Broseley Shropshire.
He's with his wife Sarah and children Martin, Mary, Martha & Samuel jnr. Also with them is William Oakes, father of Samuel Oakes senr.

1851: Samuel Oakes, widower, is still in Salthouse Broseley Shropshire. With him is his dau Mary and son Samuel Oakes jnr.

It seems that the above Samuel Oakes didn't die in 1845 in London.

Shropshire records have the following:
Samuel Oakes (aged 66) died in Broseley in 1862, bur 9 June 1862 (abode was Jackfield).
A few days earlier a Martin Oakes, (age 12) was bur 2 June 1862. (abode Jackfield)
It appears Samuel's wife Sarah Oakes (age 46) was buried Broseley 1 June 1845. (abode Jackfield)

Is this the family you are looking for?

EDIT to add:

William Oakes was buried 29 August 1841, age 81, abode Jackfield Broseley

The public trees on Ancestry suggest that the Samuel Oakes who died on 16 January 1845  ( of apoplexy, at his home 21 New Street, Westminster) was born circa 1792 at Frome, Somerset, and  was a yeoman warder at the Tower of London.

Thanks to all who replied.
Lady Di yes that is the one. I was already researching that line but for some reason I got it into my head I was going wrong. I am back on track now and have spent most of today just confirming that all info is correct with the usual cross referencing.
