Looking for birth Look up
« on: Thursday 21 May 20 05:25 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am looking for a birth lookup but may be a bit difficult as not much info. My ancestor John Brown born about 1818. I think in Newport area. He may have also gone by the name of John Allice (Ellis) Brown. Any help appreciated as it is my brickwall.

He would have been 19 at the start of civil registration.
Did he marry after the start of the GRO? where, and what names and addresses appear on the certificate.

He married in Tasmania, Australia as he was a convict. Tasmania marriage and death records don’t give any info. Got info from wife’s death whom died elsewhere that his middle name was Allice. His middle name is not on any other records. I am only thinking it may be his mothers name.

if the John Brown you're looking for the one in this post?

Is this the report of his trial - March 1838 when he was 19 & transported for 15 years?

The only baptism showing around that time in Monmouthshire is 30 Aug 1818 in Tintern for John Brown son of Thomas, waterman, & Ann Brown of Brockweir, Gloucestershire. Baptised same day as brother William, not noted as twins but might be. The 1841 census has a Thomas Brown 60 waterman in Tintern and there is a John Brown in the same household.

That is correct. He was transported so the 1841 census is not him. Think I might have to try to think outside of the box. Thanks
