William Armishaw married Mary Adams
« on: Saturday 23 May 20 15:11 BST (UK) »
My husband's 5 x great grandfather was William Armishaw, born about 1729 in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire.  He married Mary Adams on 4 Jan 1753 at St Peter's Church, Caverswall, Staffordshire.  She was aged 24 and a widow. (Source: Familysearch).

A number of trees on Ancestry have her father as Robert Adams.

As she was a widow when she married, would her name, 'Adams' be her previously married name or her maiden name

Many thanks

Thank you for the replies. I thought Adams would be her previously married name. I will have to see if I can find a Mr Adams who died between abt 1745 and 1753 who had previously been married to a Mary.....I love these puzzles  :D

My x5 great grandfather was also William Armishaw. I've checked my tree and I have his wife named as Mary Adams. This is obviously an error as I've missed the fact that Mary was a widow.

So thanks very much for posting!

I've had a quick look so far and found a marriage of a Thomas Adams to Mary Harvy (I assume should be Harvey) at Sandon in 1749 (which is close to Caverswall) Dilhorne is mentioned but I'm unsure whether this means that Dilhorne was his place of residence or Mary's.

There's a death for a Thomas Adams in 1750. Buried at Dilhorne.....

The age of Mary gives birth date of 1722....but ages aren't often accurate.

Could be a possibility maybe?

Hello Helxx

Thank you for the reply.  I was having a look on Familysearch this afternoon and saw the same information.  It was the only Mr Adams I could find who had married a Mary.

I saw the death of a Thomas Adams in 1750, which would fit nicely with the dates.  Its a shame it doesn't give the age of Thomas Adams who died.  I must admit though, it's certainly a possibility.  I'm going to try and see if I can find out any more details tomorrow.

Many thanks

Hi Chris,

I shall keep having a hunt around too!  I do feel Thomas Adams is a strong possibility though.

Best Regards
Helen

Hi Chris,

I've discovered will type documents for the Thomas Adams that died in 1750. He died without making a will and there are documents by his brother and mother and also wife Mary!

I haven't had time to decipher them yet but it appears the family are trying to ensure that wife Mary doesn't get all his money .....I'm not that great when it  comes to making sense of these documents though!

They had no children.

He was from Forsbrook, in the parish of Dilhorne. I also found  his sister Hannah also married at Sandon.

There's also a will for Thomas' father, also Thomas, who died in 1742 which gives information re the family.

Hello Helen
That’s excellent information about the ‘will’, great work!  Last night I remembered that I had the MI’s for Dilhorne Churchyard that I purchased a while ago when looking for some other Dilhorne ancestors.  Anyway, I had a look this morning and found this entry

68. THOMAS ADDAMS the son of / THOMAS ADDAMS / Was interred / January? 11th 1750 / Aged 29 years

It doesn’t mention a wife, but in light of the documents that you have found and the fact that they don’t want Mary to have his money – it maybe isn’t a surprise that they haven’t mentioned her.

It looks like we are on the right lines with Mary Adams
