Mary Ellen Sproul, 1877
« on: Wednesday 27 May 20 16:13 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to find out what happened to Mary Ellen and wondering if anyone with knowledge of Canadian records might be able to help find any records for her.

She was born in Glasgow on 16 April 1877 (but spent her early years in Coventry).

I was aware that she did ended up in Canada for a period of time from 1891 - see below 10 year old thread, having been taken into care in 1888.

She was listed as a witness on her brother's marriage in Coventry in Sept 1901, but this is the only mention I've been able to find of her as an adult.

However, I've recently discovered that she may have still been in Canada at the time of the 1901 census, as have found a record of a Nellie Sproul with the same date of birth (also stating born England / scotch ancestry) in a similar area to Quebec to the location mentioned in her care file. Although should also note that states Nellie immigrated to Canada in 1887, so chance could be someone different?

Would anyone have any advise for trying to find out more about what happened to her in Canada - it's been a long time since I searched for passenger records, but know the only ones I was ever able to find were for her 1891 trip.

Thanks

Hi Don
Thanks for the response - I’m pretty confident  the record you’ve found isn’t her and relates to Mary Elizabeth, wife of James Sproul (who I think would be a cousin of Mary Ellen).

As far as I am aware all of Mary Ellen’s immediate family left the area.

Thanks
Jo

We can confirm that Nellie Sproul, living in 1901 in Quebec (St Antoine) as a domestic to the Whitehead family, is your Nellie as her birth is confirmed as Apr 16 1877 which matches to her birthdate as given at christening:

info on the school.  Perhaps more information to be gotten here??

The wording here suggests that she was pregnant, and claiming that Mr Pegg was responsible.
There don't seem to be many Peggs in the Richmond/Sherbrooke area. :(
