White Hart Pub Woodford, family Gould family Radley
« on: Thursday 28 May 20 16:48 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

Can anyone tell me who was the publican or owner of the White Hart Pub in Woodford.
I'm looking for the Gould and Radley family.
This should be about 1830 to 1890-ish ?

Where can I find this information ?

Kind regards

The following looks like a decent starter for ten...

White Hart, High Road, Woodford Bridge
https://pubwiki.co.uk/EssexPubs/WoodfordBridge/whartwb.shtml

I expect there's probably some newspaper references for the various landlords. Was there any people in particular you're looking for?

Pigot's, White's and Kelly's are directories listing people and business by location.

Ancestry and FindMyPast hold some of these directories and you'll probably be able to find some freely available online. They typically don't have much info other the name of the person and business, and address.

White's Directories - Wikipedia

I'm having quick search through newspapers, it's looking like there's quite a few references to the families. I'll post some summaries in a bit.

There wasn't quite as many newspaper items as I thought there might be. They add a bit of interest to the families but don't help much in the way of clarifying the relationships between the Radleys and Goulds.

I suspect George Gould, the landlord in the 1870s, was probably the son of John Gould, the landlord in the 1830s.

There's a few references to George's full name being George Handy Gould, who was baptised at Woodford in 1834, the son of John and Mary Ann.

I think that John may have died in 1834 and that his widow may have had a child with Thomas Radley, the landlord in the 1840-1860s. The child being Mary Anne, born c1837, who is with Thomas on the 1851 and 1861 censuses, and later married Charles Reason in 1869, in Shoreditch.

I couldn't find any likely looking marriage for Thomas Radley and there's curious phrase on Thomas' probate entry, "a bachelor deceased". And yet he's listed on censuses as being a widower.

A few records that may help support those ideas.

If I'm right, there's a possible marriage between a John Gould and Mary Ann Lapworth, at Barking in 1825, which may be the same couple.

hi cuffie81,

wow that's a lot of information. Thank you very much.
Looks very promising, so I can look into that a little bit more.
Just one more question:
I have a copy of the 1851 census and Robert and George Gould are living with Thomas Radley at White Hart. But they are stated as being Son in Law. Now, that's not possible I think. Shouldn't that be stepson ?
And who is Charlotte Radley census 1841, also living at White Hart?

Oops, that's 2 questions ;)

There is a slight wrinkle with my theory. The John Gould who was buried in Woodford in 1834 was buried on 05 Aug, and George Handy Gould was baptised on 02 Nov 1834. There's no note on the baptism to indicate the father John was dead. The two Johns could be the same person but it's difficult to say for sure. If we could find a will for the John who died in 1834 it may help.

I have a copy of the 1851 census and Robert and George Gould are living with Thomas Radley at White Hart. But they are stated as being Son in Law. Now, that's not possible I think. Shouldn't that be stepson ?

I suspect Robert and George are stepsons of Thomas, rather than son-in-laws; they are both listed as unmarried and it's not too unusual for the relationships on censuses to be not quite exact. Obviously, without a marriage for Thomas, I'm making a few assumptions.

I think Robert and George are siblings. Robert appears to be Robert Snow Gould and he died in 1865. If you could trace back the parents John and Mary Ann you may be able to figure out where the middle names Snow and Handy come from and be more sure that they are siblings.

GRO reference:
1865 Q1 Death: Robert Snow Gould; age 35 (born c1830); West Ham; 04A; 41

Baptisms - St Mary, Islington
22 Mar 1829 - Robert Snow Gould; parents: John & Mary Ann; White Conduit Terrace; Gentm; born 21 Feb 1829

Burials - St Paul, Woodford
26 Mar 1865 - Robert Snow Gould; age 35; Woodford Bridge

And who is Charlotte Radley census 1841, also living at White Hart?

I think Charlotte is probably Thomas' niece. She's probably the daughter of Stephen & Sarah, baptised at Woodford in 1820. And I think Stephen is probably Thomas' brother.

Stephen appears to have died in 1834 and wife Sarah can be found in Woodford with the children on the censuses 1841-1871.

As an aside, I can't find a marriage for Stephen and Sarah. It seems to be a common trait in these families.
