And on same day, a baptism to Stephen and Sarah Clarke!

Liz, looking for these births is frustrating. One thing I am noticing, findmypast / familysearch do not know the difference between Cuckfield and Uckfield!

Interesting - and another who is a Gamekeeper - i wonder if he is related and the reason the other two families are visiting Selmeston? Also, why are the three Clark(e) occupations underlined?

I need to read & digest these replies, Liz I dont think the Grace at boarding school would be mine as it seems they were a bit rough and ready (lol) and looking at her adult life I just cant see her as attending a boarding school, unless she was sent to an approved school. She died in agony on Lindfield common after 2 days of convulsions. Her eldest child was Mary Ann born 1864 though.
The births dont seem to match the ones I have, of course the census might not be entirely accurate and James & Grace may not have been forthcoming with accurate info. Broom darker etc will be broom maker, a common gypsy occupation, especially in my tree.  I don't have any Goldsmiths in my tree or DNA matches sadly, I wish I did but that would make it too easy My great grannys sister Celia named one of her daughters Grace; Celia would have been 11 when Grace (her grandmother) died but it seems she knew of her, I assume. And Celia lived in Hastings, Sussex until the early 1900s. < useless info but just realised.  Edit: Found a Grace Ethel Clark and the name Ethel does run in the family. Born and died 1892 Hastings, she may be a child death.

The idea of Grace at School did seem a little far fetched but given that the siblings of that child were not sent away and remained at the family home made me a bit suspicious - I must do a bit of research into the School after supper. (The fact that the child at the school seems to vanish was also appealing!)

The Ticehurst registration is puzzling and compelling because on the one hand it seems too good to be true - why register one of your children and none of the others - and why give a maiden name that your descendants cannot easily tie in to the rest of the story! But, it's in the correct area - and at the right time ...

I think jonw65 is on to something with those Clark(e) baptisms at Selmeston - the gamekeeper bothers me - I have seen a reference to one earlier in connection with Grace but dismissed it at the time and now wish I hadn't ... it might come back to me later
