William Cave, birth unknown M. Mary Butt 21 May 1735, Gillingham, Dorset

Hello All,
I have been searching for where both my 4th GGrandparents originated from.

William Cave and Mary Butt.

They married 21 May 1735 at Gillingham, Dorset and had eight children I think, (7 I have traced, the last, Sarah may not be from that family)

My 3rd GGrandfather, John Cave, born the last son, moved to Compton Dundon, married Sarah Hill in Pitney by Langport on 22 October 1783. He died in Jan 1817 and is buried at St John the Baptist, Pitney, Somerset.

How do I find where William and Mary came from?

Sorry, I would also appreciate any help finding out William and Mary's birth/baptism dates and parentage.
I just don't know where to look as I am out bush in South Australia.

Sorry guys,   I have just noticed that I posted this same query in May 19.
I am still trying to plod along with this.   
I have been through the OPC.
Where/what now though? Do I go to a Historical Society to try to find help researching?
I sort of know how to track things down in Australia but English records way back then are a mystery to me......damn colonial!

No ages given.

Marriage same Church;
Susanah CAVE/James CABLE 14 Dec 1778, a JOHN Cave a witness

I see Johns Burial has him as age 67 , birth c 1750, so quite old to marry 1783

Hi Trish,     thankyou for your interest.
I did see the age difference, still, it's all I have.
This family moved to Somerset next generation and I have quite a bit on them.
I have a tree on A....try - "Williams Family Tree" if you can see them.
But previous to that it gets harder for me.

There are only baptisms then?

I did see the Thomas Cave one as a father on OPC but that name really doesn't "fit" in my lot. No children named that after is a bit odd.

Hi Chris.

I'm not sure what to suggest but getting back as far as you have is quite a feat.

I gave up on some lines early 1700's as it was hard to find conclusive records.

Sorry Trish,
There was 1 Thomas Cafe listed as father to William Cave/Cafe but as I said, my feeling is that he is not mine.

Trish, if you can't get further back then what hope have I got?
You're much more experienced than me!

I think I got artificially inflated with results advertised and shown in programs.

Plus, Jamjar helped me immensely with Swedish Ancestors back to 1600's.

Some places have great records.  I am struggling to get Prussian/German records too.

I read new posts every night to see if any relate to me or I might learn new things.

New records are being added on free sites all the time so dont be totally discouraged.
