Cause of death Frank Callaway

Can anyone help please.  I am trying to find out the cause of death of Francis Calloway/Frank Callaway.  He lived in Whitwell from 1837 to 1876 dying aged 38.  All I know is it was a lingering illness.  He was my gg grangfather.  I hope someone can help.  Thank you.

Would that be Whitwell, Isle of Wight, by any chance? I have had a look round but found nothing yet. May I also ask how you know his year of death? And, lastly, any chance his Christian name was something else, like Frederick?

Hi there.  Yes, he was from Whitwell IOW.  I have a small commerative card and photograph, the card says he died after a lingering illness and gives the dates 1837 - 1876.  His name was definately Frank/Francis and not Frederick.  His name was Callaway but it has bee transcribed as Calloway.  Thank you for your response.  This is my first posting.

Your best bet is to get his death certificate.  As you know the year it should not be too hard to find.  It may be on the FreeBMD on www.ancestry.co.uk or otherwise on www.1837online.com which is a paying site but full coverage  whereas the free site is not.  Alternatively you could write to the Register office on the IOW and ask them to look for it.  A certficate costs £7.
In 1871 he is in Whitwell with his wife Selah age 30 and son Mosden age 3 months.  All born Whitwell.  Do you have that?

He is not to be found on freeBMD under Callaway, Calloway, Galawy, Galway nor any other combination I can think of. There is a marriage of a Frank Callaway on IOW in 1877 but I suspect that is not to the point.
