Hospitals in Reading, Berkshire in 1920s?
« on: Tuesday 02 June 20 22:05 BST (UK) »
I came across a list of hospitals in Reading in the 1920s (amongst other dates) but frustratingly cannot find this list again.  That will teach me to bookmark webpages!

Can anyone point me to a list please?

I wanted to write to the relevant body's archives to enquire about previous employees - nurses to be precise.  I have searched for this person on Ancestry, with no luck, and used the Royal College of Nursing request service, but it turned out that their records are all on Ancestry, so I have already searched them.

I have a lot of personal info about this person but would like to know about her nursing career, in particular up to 1930.  All I know is that she was a nurse at a hospital in Reading, and I don't think she nursed anywhere else.  She was born in 1910 so I suppose she would have begun her training when she was 16 at the earliest i.e. 1926.    She married in 1934 in Reading, but I don't know if nurses usually left once married.  She had her first children in 1936, 37 and 38 so would have certainly left by then, I would have thought.

All ideas for sources welcome.

Thanks.
Val

Hi Val

I think that the two main general hospitals at the time in question were the Royal Berkshire and Battle hospitals. The latter was closed and merged with the former a few years ago. It no longer exists even as a building whereas the Royal Berkshire is still very much the main hospital for the town.

I can't give you an appropriate reference or even know that they will be able to help but I'm sure that if you Google the name you will find some contact details.

cheers
Tony

I had a look for a list and couldn’t find one either. I’m from Reading and had only heard of Battle and RBH.
However can see
Prospect Park Hospital. 1906-1987. Honey End Lane, Tilehurst
Dellwood Hospital, Tilehurst (looks to have been maternity).
Think it would be worth contacting the Berkshire medical heritage centre?

Maybe this is the list you refer to. Looks like they have all been mentioned in this thread.

Thanks Meelystar for both those links.  They're most promising so I will start with the Facebook page and see what they can suggest.

I have found a National Archive/Wellcome list too, https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/hospitalrecords/, which looks a familiar format, so might have been the list I found originally, although I thought there was reference to children's wards.  Although I suppose all hospitals had children's wards.  It caught my eye because I think this nurse might have worked with children at some point.

There was Pauline but I wouldn’t describe that as Reading.
