In fact her parents lived near Wallingford (in Brightwell) but her children are definite that she worked in a Reading hospital.  She was married in Reading and her children born there too.

Maybe this is the list you refer to. Looks like they have all been mentioned in this thread.

The one that is missing off the list is Blagrave Hospital roughly at the top of Langley Hill in Tilehurst.  My father went there to recover from an operation in the early 60's.   I believe it was originally another isolation hospital (TB) and was referred to in some places as a "branch hospital".   I believe that the Royal Berkshire Hospital was the "parent" hospital.

A few of these on the list seemed to be isolation hospitals, but her children didn't mention this specifically.  Doesn't mean she didn't work in one, of course.

I've dropped a line to the Berkshire Record Office via their Facebook page to see what records they hold too.

Once their office reopens, I'll post the answers here for any other person with a similar enquiry.

It is possible that the Royal Berkshire Hospital Museum may be able to help you.   They are the custodians of the RBH archive going back to 1837 and as Blagrave appears to have been a branch of RBH, possibly the records are held there.

Thanks HarryW.  Yesterday I FaceBook messaged the Berkshire Medical Heritage Museum and I think they house the Royal Berkshire archives.

I privately messaged the Berkshire Record Office FB page and I was given an email contact for someone connected with Berkshire Medical Heritage Museum.  This person then corresponded with me immediately, telling me that the museum does hold staff and patient information for the dates I'm interested in, but they will have to look up the records for me because these are closed to the public for 100 yrs.

So all I've had to do is provide evidence of the nurse's date of death and ask her closest living relative to make the request for info, and fingers crossed, I shall find out more.  They only have records for the main hospital though, not the isolation hospitals.  Once they can go back to work in the museum, they'll be able to look up the info.

Fingers crossed!

Thanks for all the suggestions on here.

An update.  After a long period of closure due to Covid, someone has managed to research the records at the medical museum to discover that the nurse I was interested in was not in any staff records for Royal Berkshire but was listed for Battle hospital between 1929 and 1932.  She would have been 19 when she started at Battle, but her records just stated that she'd passed her preliminary exam.  It didn't say if this was taken at Battle or elsewhere.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and help.

The old entrance to Battle Hospital is still standing.  It's now some sort of community centre.
Google Streetview has images of it at various times going back to 2009.
