Help finding a father’s name.
« on: Wednesday 03 June 20 19:29 BST (UK) »
My grandfather, Patrick Flynn, was born 23 August 1892 in Liverpool. On his birth certificate his father is Andrew Flynn, his mother Alice Ann née Taylor. There were at least 5 other children born to Andrew and Alice Ann—Andrew 1888, Joseph 1890, Peter 1895, John 1896, and Michael 1901—all with the same mother’s maiden name on their birth certificates. I’ve found RC christening records for some of the boys.
But, I’ve been unable to find a marriage between Andrew and Alice Ann, though I’ve searched a number of sites, and even searched just using first names. I’m beginning to think the couple never married. (In the 1881 census Andrew was “married” to a woman named Sarah who was born in Scotland. I’ve been unable to find a record of this marriage also.)
Without a marriage, how can I find out Alice Ann’s father’s name? According to the censuses (1891 and 1901) she was born about 1864 in Liverpool.
Thanks!
Bridget

I have. And I’ve found one who looked likely, and ordered her birth certificate. It could be my Alice Ann, and probably is, but how can I be sure?

Do you think any of the children could have been named after her father?

Was Andrew married previously?

I’ve found Andrew in 1881. He’s living with Sarah, who is supposedly his wife (though I’ve found no record for this marriage either). She was apparently born in Scotland.

He was married to Sarah in 1881, but there appears to be no record of the marriage.
