Samuel Armitage and son John Armitage, Kilkenny
« on: Sunday 07 June 20 13:04 BST (UK) »
Hello there,

Can anyone help me try located some information on my great and great great grandads.  I have the details of my Great Grandad from census where he settled in Leeds, England.  The only information it shows is year of birth to be around 1862 and place of birth Kilkenny.  From further research I think I have found him in Leeds with his Father, Samuel Armitage, year of birth 1831, but the census just says Ireland for his place of birth.

I think Samuel came to the UK and married Eliza Perkins from Leeds in 1873, I do not think John is hers as she would only have been between 11 and 13 when he was born.

I have not had much success in any searches I have done when it comes to Ireland so any help would really be appreciated.

Thanks

Very little information to go on, but bank the following baptism for now.

It's from the registers of St. John's RC parish, Kilkenny city, it says that a son John was born on 14th (January 1860), baptised on the 17th, to parents Samuel Armitage and Alicia Cuddihy of Maudlin Street, the sponsors were James Pickerscale? and Margaret Cantwell (right page, 10th entry down):

There is also the following baptism of a son William to a similarly named couple - Samuel Armitage and Alicia Cuddy - some 30 miles west in County Tipperary (in Ballycahill and Holy-Cross RC parish) on 22 June 1862  (bottom of right page):

This is interesting, if it is the same John Armitage.  My great grandfather John Armitage married my Great Grandmother Laura Jane Croft in Leeds in 1895 but she was about 14 years younger than him so I did wonder if he had a previous marriage.

John Armitage was killed when working in a quarry after my grandmother was born in 1913, I think in 1914 and I have found him but am waiting on the death certificate, I have also found a grave for a John Armitage in the Catholic Cememtery in Killingbeck, Leeds which would correspond with this.

The 1901 census has John and Laura living in Leeds with their children but also John's brother William Armitage born approx 1886.  I have found a Samuel Armitage married to a Eliza Perkins in Leeds, married 1873 with a son called William, perhaps Samuel remarried after Alice died in 1872? Would he have more children and call them the same names though? Maybe these are two different families?

Thanks for all your help on this.

Just looking this John Armitage is shown in Holbeck, Leeds with His wife Kate in 1901 so couldn’t be the same one, as my John Armitage was married to Laura Jane in 1895.
