Tasmania- Death of Francis Gilbert

Hi,

Hope everyone is safe and well! I have recently made the rather exciting discovery that my ancestor (Francis Gilbert) was a convict transported to Tasmania in September 1838 and have discovered the convict records associated with him held at the Tasmanian Archives.

However I would love to know when and where he died, which I have not been able to locate. Also if he married. I know he was 'freed' in 1846 and I am assuming he remained in Tasmania. Anyone able to help in this quest would be most helpful!

He was born in 1813 and his parents were Francis Gilbert and Ann Duncan.

No, my Francis was born and brought in Fetteresso, Kincardineshire.

Hi guys,

I have just had a thought, could it be a possibility that Francis perhaps moved to neighboring Victoria after being freed in 1846? Was it common for freed convicts to migrate to other parts of Australia or were they more likely to remain where they were in the first place (in this case Tasmania)?  I did a search on Births, Deaths and Marriages Victoria site and found an entry for a Francis Gilbert who died in 1863 aged 50 (born 1813). I believe this may be him, however can't be for certain, as his parents details are not included.

Yes very common for them to move to Victoria particularly during to gold rush in the 1850s

I see that the 1863 death Vic reg 6738 gives the place of birth as ABER, which could be Aberdeen, Fetteresso being about 20 miles from there.

He was tried for felony in 1855 in Victoria as Duncan GILBERT and sentenced to two years hard labor.

Duncan Gilbert was arraigned on the charge of stealing £40 from his master, Daniel Nicholson, on
the 31st of December.  It appeared that the prisoner was left alone in the house on the day of the robbery, and in the evening the bag with the money in it was missed. The bag, with £13 10s., was found on the prisoner when arrested by Constable Whitmore. Verdict, guilty. Sentence - Two years' imprisonment, with hard labor.

His record identifies him as Francis GILBERT of the Layton.  No relations in the colony.

You might be interested in this link to Francis Gilbert's time in Tasmania. It comes from the Founders to Survivors project ( I was a volunteer researcher) and gives a great deal of information about what happened to convicts post sentence.
