Confirmation for a silly question
« on: Monday 08 June 20 21:38 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone, I know in advance that this may seem like a silly question, or possibly two.

Firstly the less silly of the two: I have some people I think are relatives (John Masterson b.1827 in Ireland & Mary Ann Masterson b. 1830 in Ireland) living at 24 Ogden Street, Harpurhey on both the 1881 & 1891 Census. I cannot find them really on the previous census' and wondered if anyone is able to check the electors roll online to see if they are listed any years before 1881 at this address - one of the paying sites says it has electors records online for the area but I cannot afford access to all the sites available.

The second question is much more obsurd. It has been suggested to me by another researcher in my family that this same family are living at 12 Ogden Street as listed on the 1871 Census despite a few problems - the smaller one being that they are recorded as being called Masterman, the much bigger issue I have is that the head of the house is right in all but name. He is clearly listed as being called Thomas - nothing at all like John. It has been suggested that this was written by mistake and the electors rolls could clear this up but I am not convinced at all. I wondered if someone could help put this idea to bed by again looking at the electors roll for this house in 1871 or there abouts?

Thank you for reading and for any possible help.
Luke

What about the children - do they match?

Added

1871 and 1881  are both 24 Ogden Street

They both look like Masterman  :-\

1861 census is a good example of how names can be misheard by the enumerators especially when an Irish accent is involved.
RG9 Piece 2964 Folio 47 Page 36
12 Ogden Street Manchester
John Marginson 28 Labourer Armagh, Ireland
Mary Ann Marginson    25 Piecer at cotton mill  Galloway, Ireland
Margret Marginson 9 Dublin, Ireland
James Marginson    5 Collyhurst, Lancashire,
Mary Ann Marginson 2 Collyhurst, Lancashire,

A correction for the surname to Masterson was entered by paulychops on 13/11/2017

I've found a wedding certificate for Jane Masterson of 24 Ogden St to William Henry Cock in 1889 with her father listed as John Masterson.

I've also just found a wedding certificate for John Masterson of 107 Montague St in 1887, again son of John Masterson. John and Jane appear on each others certificates as witnesses with unmistakable signatures and William Henry Cock is alos a witness at John's wedding (though calling himself William Henry Cox).

The Margaret Masterson matches my relative but I havent found anything for the other children as yet.

Thanks Heywood.

Crisane thats a good find, that does look like them. Maybe the 1871 is correct too but from John to Thomas seems a big leap doesnt it?

Margaret Masterson
Baptism Age:    0
Birth Date:    1851
Baptised 22 June 1851
At Rathmines, Dublin city, Dublin, Ireland
Parish Variants - Rathmines
Diocese:    Dublin
Father - John Masterson
Mother:    Maryanne Toole

GRO index
Masterman William
GRO Reference: 1869  Sept 1/4 Manchester vol 8d page 258 mother's maiden name Toole. So another example of a misheard/use of different surname.
I haven't found the earlier Lancashire births yet.

When information is being written down by others and the people giving it are most likely unable to read or write things can go wrong and not be corrected.  So a  mix up between the informant and the recorder or maybe the enumerator got it wrong when transferring the information.

The children born in England also have mother’s name Toole.

Women probably wouldn't be included on Electoral Rolls of the time, and men only if they met the criteria of house ownership or rent above a certain level.
