Harry CROSS possible Anzac veteran
« on: Saturday 13 June 20 18:31 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am not sure if I am doing this right, but here goes!

I am researching a friend's grandfather Harry CROSS, born 17 Jul 1884, all she knows is that her mother Muriel Allington CROSS was born in Australia in 1921.  She returned to the UK aboard the SS Borda arriving on 6 Sep 1923, with her father. mother Eva Alice nee ALLINGTON, and brother Harry Roscoe CROSS.

Harry and Eva married in Kings Norton, Warwickshire in 1917 and their son Harry R was born on 13 Dec 1919, in Kings Norton.  Some time after this event the family went to Australia, I haven't found any details of this as yet.

Family stories (not sure if a reliable source) say that Harry served in both the Australian and UK forces. I am not sure where the service records for Australian military personnel are kept or how to access them.  Can anyone help please

WWI records for Harry Cross, wife Eva Alice, can be found here - he signed up in 1915 in NSW and gave his mother as his next of kin, but later this was changed to his wife.

The records contain an extract of his marriage to Eva, and some details of medicals and of his movements during the war.

This appears to be the most detailed account of the Zealandic bringing the troops and their families home.

Arrival in NSW.

It stopped at Fremantle, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney, and then went on to New Zealand.

Wow! Thanks, it’s my first time searching for Australians and you guys turned up trumps. My friend will be over the moon with this information..

I thought he might have been born in Yorkshire but this proves my assumption was right..
