Victoria, Australia. Catherine BIRD
« on: Saturday 20 June 20 01:37 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am trying to find when my grandmother Catherine BIRD went to Melbourne from Landsborough Vic., Her father William Bird died in Stawell in 1875. Her mother Margaret BIRD (nee RYAN) went with her daughter Catherine to Melbourne and may have lived in Carlton as Catherine was married there in 1888 according to her marriage certificate. Catherine married Patrick Power and I think they may have lived in Footscray as my father John Thomas Power was born there.
I can't see anything on Rates notices but they may have been renting and I don't think they would be on the rates notices.
Catherine BIRD was born in Landsborough in 1864.
Thank you
Biddyp

There is mention of a Margaret Bird, publican, in Melbourne 1879, bottom of 3rd column:

http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article199365741

Looks like she died 1880, aged 34.

Not the correct one, by the looks.

This is Margaret’s death: 9507/1896 BIRD Margt mother MALONE Cath father RYAN Jno at EUROA aged 57

Death notice, 3rd column: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article65524793

What makes you think Margaret also went to live in a Melbourne?

Thank you, Jamjar. On my grandmother's marriage certificate Catherine's Residence is Carlton and she is a Staymaker. Her husband Patrick Power's place of residence is East Brunswick.
They must have moved to Euroa, Victoria, in 181892 or 1893 as their next child was born in Euroa.
Thanks once again,
Biddyp

Thank you Sparrett,
Or Sue,
The witnesses on their marriage certificate were Andrew Bourke and Elizabeth Loughlan but I have no idea who they were. They were married in the Catholic Church in Carlton on 27th October 1888.
Thanks once again,
Biddyp

It seems that at least in 1896 Catherine may have been living in Euroa ( Mrs P Power of Euroa)
www.trove.nla.gov.au Euroa Advertiser 31/7/1896. But could mean her mother was at Euroa.

BIRD.--On the 28th July, Margaret Bird,
widow of the late William Bird,
storekeeper, late of Landsborough
and Stawell, and beloved mother of
Mrs. P. Power, Euroa.

Also:20 Aug 1897 as above
my dear little son Willie, who died at
Footscray on the 27th March, 1890.

Hi,
In reply #1 Jamjar has asked why you think Margaret was in Melbourne.

It is clear mother and daughter ended up in Euroa, but do you think it not possible that Catherine went to Melbourne alone?

Melbourne is not mentioned as a "late" place of residence in death notices and she did not witness her only daughter's marriage in Melbourne

In the probate application in the estate of Margaret Bird , Euroa died intestate 1896- searchable here

https://prov.vic.gov.au/explore-collection/explore-topic/wills-and-probates

Application is made by Thomas John Power of Brock St. Euroa and Catherine Mary Power  of Brock Street and another man named Wilson also of Brock street.

I wonder if it was a family group in Euroa which Patrick and Catherine POWER joined in the early 1880's

Margaret BIRD is declared to own a block of land in this document but it is not clear to me whether it had a house on it.

Dear Shume,
Thank you for your reply. Yes, My grandfather Patrick Power who married Catherine Bird (Margaret's daughter) must have moved to Euroa in 1892 or 1893. I think Catherine's mother, Margaret must have also moved there then or soon after as that is where she died. It seems from Probabte that she had a block of land at Northcote Melbourne so maybe that is where they lived in Melbourne.
Thanks again,
Biddyp
