Finding a Death Certificate for RAF Uncle shot down in WW2
« on: Monday 22 June 20 10:05 BST (UK) »
Hi all

In WW2, my Uncle (Harold Sherratt) was a member of 15 Squadron and on March 3rd 1943, was returning from a bombing mission over Hamburg when the Short Stirling plane (EF333 LS-X) he was in was shot down by enemy fire.  All lives lost, no known grave.

Will I be able to get a copy of a death certificate?

I've looked on Find My Past but his death doesn't show up, I've searched with his details on the GRO Online Index but nothing shows there either.

Sorry to have to ask such a basic question, but I'm a bit stuck.

Thanks ever so much Rosie99!  I don't know what I was doing wrong but obviously did something!  Very much appreciated.

I'll get on and order it now :-)

When I am looking for overseas or military deaths on FindMyPast I normally google overseas military deaths as I find it is quicker to get to the proper search page that way  ;D.  Don't follow the Forces War records link though.

Rosie - does it give a 'District Name' or 'Quarter'?  The order page is telling me I also need these?

I gather from your first post that you have access to FindMyPast.  Sorry, I cannot give you the link to the page but if you search as I suggested you should be able to find the transcript & image of the GRO index book for any queries you have.

I have highlighted the reference number you should need to get the certificate on my original post.  I think these certificates give very little information on cause of death.
