The Woodlands Baptist Chapel - gone!
« on: Monday 22 June 20 20:39 BST (UK) »
Hi, does anyone know the street called the Woodlands in Birkenhead? There used to be a Welsh Baptist Chapel on the corner of Low Wood Grove which can be seen on this map but that corner shows a block of flats now. My great uncle was buried there in 1953 and I would really like to know what happened to the graves. Do you remember that chapel or know what happened to the graves when it was demolished? I think this was only in the last 20 years.

It apparently closed in 1982. I would imagine they would have been possibly reinterred in maybe Flaybrick cemetery.

Maybe contact the cemetery and ask them. Wirral Archives might know.

You can see the chapel on this map https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=18&lat=53.38846&lon=-3.02487&layers=168&right=BingHyb

There is no burial ground marked on the Ordnance Survey maps. https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/331927/388430/13/101329
You don't have to subscribe just change the zoom level with the - in the top left corner.

This is from the Liverpool Echo 22 January 1943. Are you sure it was a burial at the chapel and not just the funeral service?

Thank you for all that information! And how nice to see the Chapel. I thought the burial was at Woodlands, but maybe not. It was Thomas Stephen Jones who was buried 11 March 1953. I will have to keep searching for him.

There is death notice in the Liverpool Echo on March 5 1953 for a Thomas Jones who died 3 March. The funeral on 6 March at Woodchurch Road Welsh Chapel  and then interment at Landican Cemetery. His wife was Mary A and a son and daughter with names beginning with M.

Is this your Thomas?

That doesn't sound like him. He was Thomas Stephen Jones, his wife was Mary Margaret Jones and he had one son Llewelyn Noel Stephen Jones. My cousin now thinks she has made a mistake, that the service was at The Woodlands and the burial possibly at Christchurch, Higher Bebington. We will try there. Thanks for looking, I would expect something in the Liverpool Echo as he was an important pharmacist!

Woodchurch Road Welsh Chapel is not the same as the Woodlands Road Chapel

I thought perhaps not but as I found it whilst looking for something completely different I thought I’d post it anyway.
