Tracing Sister who died at Connah's Quay
« on: Tuesday 23 June 20 17:23 BST (UK) »
Hi

Looking for help please.

My mother and three children were evacuated to Connah's Quay 1944-1945.  Sadly my sister, Marion Rose Cowling (aged 8 months) died whilst there.

I am trying to find where she is buried as I would love to visit her grave but cannot trace her name in any records for the area.  I have been in touch with North East Wales Archives and, although they have been very helpful, they cannot assist, especially as I believe that my sister would have been buried in an unmarked grave.  Marion died on the 21st January 1945 in the Registration District of Holywell, in the sub district of Flint, and the family where staying at Farfield Hall, Connah's Quay.

So, two things really, can anyone help with my quest to find my sister and has any one any thoughts on how I might obtain Evacuee records for Connah's Quay.

With many thanks in anticipation.

I wonder if your late sister was in hospital when she died and if she was that hospital may have used a certain cemetery for those who sadly died.

Or could she have been buried in her 'home cemetery' - you say she was evacuated with her mother.

Would local undertakers have records for that period?

Further to Zetlander’s reply, my pregnant maternal grandmother was evacuated to South Wales, as were all her children  except my mother. When she died in childbirth her body was brought back to London by train. Apparently this required a (?) coroner’s certificate to pass through each district and proved so costly that when my mother’s  brother died a year later they couldn’t afford to repeat it and he was buried in the municipal cemetery where he died. Luckily we have the memorial cards which show the grave numbers. It might be worth seeing if any are tucked away as it seems to be the norm for the times.

Good luck

Hi Zealander and Jo6100

Many thanks for your ideas. Knowing the family situation at the time and my father being in the army,  I assume that she was buried in Wales.  I have been on various sites to try to trace where she was buried with no luck.

She may have been cremated.

As you suggest, I will look for the local hospital and try to trace records.

The only record that I have is my mother's identity card, which gives 3 addresses that the family were evacuated to at Connah's Quay.

Thank you for your interest and ideas.

Found her!

Marion Rose Cowling buried 24 Jan 1945 in grave Q25 at Bryn Road Cemetery Connah's Quay. (no one else in grave.)

If you're going to visit suggest you contact Richard Blake Bereavement Services Manager
(01352) 703360.
There is someone based at Bryn Road Cemetery and he will show you Grave Q25 - you wont be able to find it by yourself.   Richard Blake will arrange for the guy based at Bryn Road to meet you there.

Cheers!
