Lancaster St Mary's (Priory)
« on: Thursday 25 June 20 13:51 BST (UK) »
Hi there - sorry if this is the wrong group...

Recently I've seen a couple of burials that appear in St Mary's Lancaster burial records, only to find that they are buried in Lancaster Cemetery (council-operated) in Quernmore Road, Lancaster. This is from information provided by Lancaster City Council (who provide an excellent service,  free service by the way!).

An example is Mary Hatton (née Cook) died 23 Jan 1871, born 1817

291-O-Consecrated at Lancaster Cemetery, Quernmore Road, Lancaster
Mrs Mary Hatton, 15 Cable Street Lancaster. Age 54 years. Date of burial 26/01/1871

I'm wondering if St Mary's ceased being a burial site after a certain date? Perhaps with the exception of existing graves maybe?

Lancaster Cemetery opened in 1855.

Is it just the funeral that is in the burial records?

Thanks in anticipation

Martin

St. Mary burial registers on Lancashire Online Parish Clerks website go up to 1881.
www.lan-opc.org.uk/Lancaster/stmary/index.html

The Burial Act 1853 was one of a series of Burials Acts. Some churchyards were closed to burials for public health reasons. Local authorities were allowed to purchase land for cemeteries.
