Jane Elizabeth Fargo Daughter (?) of Mortimer Fargo
« on: Friday 26 June 20 14:22 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find how Jane Elizabeth became the daughter of Mortimer Fargo.
What I have found out is Mary McDonnell when to New York in May 1900 and in November 1929 completed the New York, State and Federal Naturalization Record stating her name is Jane Elizabeth Fargo, This helped me find her on the 1920's census showing her as Mortimer's Daughter. I know Mortimer died in 1921 and Jane kept the name.  The last record I have for her is the 1930 Census. If she was adopted would there be a record & where would I look?  There was an regular allowance sent home to Mayo so I am also looking for a death date or copy of the will if there was one.  Any help welcomed. Thanks

This same news article can be found in numerous newspaper around the county for 2 Feb. 1918

News-Journal
Mansfield, Ohio
Saturday, February 02, 1918 - Page 5

Certainly Good to Jane,
New York, Feb. 2. Miss Jane Elizabeth Geraty, aged 40, is today the adopted daughter of wealthy Mortimer Fargo, formerly connected with the Wells Fargo Express company. Legal adoption of Miss Geraty is Fargo's idea of recompensing a faithful housekeeper who has served him for years. He is 74 years old.

That is really interesting, there is a slight problem with the surname as it should be McDonnell and I don't have any reference to Geraty in the family tree.  Its possibly her mothers maiden name.  It also has a clue in that her mother died while she was a young child so I will see what I can find out from there.  Thank you for your help this is great.

This appears to be her returning from a trip to Ireland in 1930. Age is about right, occupation housekeeper and lived in New York for 30 years (1900). It appears she has a sister Mrs. K. Kilcoyne in Co Mayo. Assuming this is the same Jane E Fargo in question, does she have a sister married to a Kilcoyne?

Yes the details match so I am taking it to be the same person and we have Kilcoynes in the family in the same area.  On her Declaration of intent for Naturalization it has both names Jane Elisabeth Fargo and Mary McDonnell and the Mayo address. When she arrived in Ellis Island for the first time in May 1900, it is as Mary McDonnell going to a relative in New York also called McDonnell (Very hard to read the ships manifest)

I am curious as to how she picket up the name Jane Elizabeth and/or Kate Gerety.
