I have been trying for some time, without luck, to trace the origins of my Grt.Grt, Grandfather, James Cowan, b.1814, Ireland. His 1842 marriage certificate in Liverpool gives his father's name as Phillip. Later census has John Cowan living in the same household as James in Tipton, Staffs.. I estimate John's birth to be about 1793, so he is either James' older brother or uncle. The census also lists him as a widower,
A search reveals a Johannes (john) Cowan in two marriages - 30 Jan 1822 to Anna Russel, and 29 Jun 1825 to Catharina McGrane. In both cases the marriage place is given as Templemichael in the diocese of Ardagh.
Could this John be a member of the family I am looking for? Running out of ideas of where to look!

Would John Cowan have been Catholic? if so, have you tried searching parish registers for baptism?

There's more than one Ardagh R.C. parish but Templemichael is in Co. Longford (also Ardagh Diocese covers Co. Longford) so this looks like the correct one-

Baptisms & marriages start 1802 and they've also early burials.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Ardagh parish in Co. Longford is quite a bit away from Drumgooland parish in Co. Down, as referenced in your previous topic, what is the connection between the two?

The forename/surname combination Philip Cowan is quite rare (relative to John and James), I noticed the following one in the flaxgrowers list of 1796, just to note in case the area of Keady parish otherwise crops up in your ongoing research.
