Smith and Co (South Shields) Ltd
« on: Saturday 27 June 20 17:27 BST (UK) »
George Smith set up an ironfounding business in Nile Street around 1880 taking a Mr Henderson as a partner.(Henderson Smith or Smith Henderson).

Mr Henderson left after three or four years and George proceeded under the name of Smith and Co

George died around 1902 and his son Edward inherited the business and subsequently went into partnership with a James Smith (no relation). The company became Smith and Co(South Shields)Ltd in the early 1920s.

Sometime around 1928 or 1929 there seems to have been some dispute and James Smith bought out Edward Smith.

Is there any way in which we can determine the reason for the split as there seems to have been continuing animosity for many years. It was rumoured that Edward's family felt that he had been hard done by.

I understand that Smith and Co (South Shields) Ltd ceased trading some five years ago.
