Sudden death in Liverpool in 1889
« on: Sunday 28 June 20 07:20 BST (UK) »
On 4 December 1889 Elizabeth (Bessie) Osborne, aged 32, from Cornwall died suddenly in Liverpool. The notice of her death in a Cornish newspaper identified her as " wife of John Osborne of Colorado". I am assuming she was in Liverpool either to meet her returning husband or en route to join him.

Is it at all possible that the circumstances of her death were such that they attracted the attention of the local Liverpool press?

Birmingham Daily Post
6th December 1889
Among the passengers landed at Liverpool on Wednesday, from the Inman and International steamer City of Paris, was a woman named Elizabeth Osborne, who was confined during the voyage. As she was very ill it was decided to move her to the Northern Hospital, but on the journey there she died.

Liverpool Echo
4th December 1889
Elizabeth Osborne, a female passenger by the City of Paris, died this morning from cramp. The passengers were brought up by tender, and the deceased was taken to Northern Hospital. The intense cold is said to have had something to do with the sad affair.
It appears from further particulars that the woman had been confined on board the City of Paris, and that she was being conveyed in a cab to the Northern Hospital when she suddenly expired before reaching the institution.

OSBORNE   Elizabeth   33   1889   Howard Street   Liverpool   HOW/100/57 - her death registration

she was only 33 - very young

The David Lewis Northern Hospital was located in Great Howard Street, Liverpool. It was first established in 1834 and closed in 1978....so her death was registered by the Hospital - do you know where she was buried ??

I posted this more in hope than expectation so I am thrilled by these prompt and informative responses.
I have not found record of John's migration and had assumed he travelled alone. They had a son born in 1881, so presumably he was with them. Why was Elizabeth returning alone?
Elizabeth was buried in St Agnes, Cornwall, on  8th December. (their place of origin). John remarried in1895 in St Agnes. I yet to look for his return. In fact I can find no other evidence of his time in America.

“Was confined” at that time meant “gave birth”.
