McNALLY family - Kingston upon Hull
« on: Wednesday 01 July 20 23:05 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone,

Have basic information from 1891 and 1901 census returns but struggling to find anything else on various members. (The 1891 census records the family as 'McNilley'). All marked as being born in Hull (though 1901 census has mother born in Westminster!)

Father: James McNally (born circa 1843)
Mother: Catherine/Kate (no maiden name - born circa 1850)
Children: Meira McNally (born circa 1874), Bridget C McNally (b circa 1877), John McNally (b circa 1880), Catherine/Kitty McNally (b 1881 or 1883. My great grandmother, married G W Pashby in 1903), Caroline/Carrie McNally (b circa 1885) and Patrick McNally (b circa 1887).

Any help gratefully received,
Dave.

The names James Mcanally and  Catherine Donaghy appear on the same page  June Q 1872 Cockermouth, but I cannot find anything (children's birth) to confirm they  married each other.

Catherine Donaghy. Birth  Dec Q 1855. Whitehaven.  All highly speculative.

Jamjar: Thanks for the welcome! Not finding any of the births on GRO is disappointing but I appreciate you searching. Methinks this endeavour is going to be as tricky as I had envisaged...

Dundee (Debra): Blimey! If these were to be them I'd probably end the project now :) Thank you so much for looking.

Brentor boy: Seeing Cockermouth I immediately had doubts. I then immediately chastised myself. This really is a field where I need to be more open-minded to possibility. As you suggest, speculation should be exercised but the 'what if' is such a driver!

Thanks again,
Dave

The 1881 and 1891 addresses are very close to each other in Hull.

So - children so far to James and Catherine/Chatwin (the latter my reading of the 1881 name):

Wilhelmina bc 1870 at sea - or Waterford, Ireland as she states after marriage as Wilhelmina Bateman
Mary A bc 1872 at sea
Maud/Meira bc 1874 America or Hull
James bc 1876 America or Hull
Bridget C bc 1877 Hull*
Ellen bc 1878 China*
John William bc 1880 America or Hull
Catherine/Kitty bc 1883 Hull
Caroline/Carrie bc 1885 Hull
Patrick bc 1887 Hull

*Bridget and Ellen may be the same person, marrying as Bridget E McNally to John W Hessey in 1915 and later found in 1920s Hull electoral rolls as Bridget Ellen Hessey.

I think the name is 'Maud' in 1891, not Meira or Maria.  Married as Maud Elizabeth to Henry BAINES and is living a few doors down from her mother in 1901 (BAYNES).

Mary A looks likely to be the Mary Agnes McNally who married Thomas Pell in Hull in 1889. Later records show her born Hull c1868. She died in Hull in 1917 aged 49.
