Unprecedented !
« on: Thursday 02 July 20 10:14 BST (UK) »
[Rant on]

Has anybody noticed that from the Prime Minister downwards, through all Government Ministers, all spokespersons, right down to to the lowest of the lowly Council workers, they all say "unprecedented"?

It is as if a statement cannot be believed, or be true, or official, or fact, or even desirable knowledge unless they tell us that the times are unprecedented. Three months after the start and they are still telling us.

And each time they say it, it is with such sincerely - as if they are imparting some golden gem of secret knowledge!

A friend of mine is a member of an on-line debating society. He was arguing that since the dawn of time every single day has been unprecedented. There are so many variables in the world that it is impossible for two days to be the same!

Yes Chas,as I read elsewhere, there has been an unprecedented use of the word unprecedented in these unprecedented times.

They also say 'it is very clear' quite often when it clearly isn't.

There is also a lot of governmental talk about being 'proud' of the way the UK has dealt with the coronavirus pandemic:  highest number of infections per million of population (other than Belgium), and at least 60,000 excess deaths in four months.  Makes one wonder what their original intentions were, if this result is considered to be worthy of pride and self-congratulation.

Really?.

Local television interviewed some dustmen. "Did their job change because of the lockdown?"

So, yes, really.

But why are they "lowly". More akin to "indispensable" I would have thought.

Lowly and indispensable are not mutually exclusive, are they?

Every Council has a rank structure and they were at the bottom of it, indispensable, or not.
