Furmston family of Oswestry
« on: Friday 03 July 20 14:32 BST (UK) »
I would appreciate any help on the Furmston family in Oswestry. I am having difficulty which I find strange given the name (an Evans family tree has proven to be easier).
I am related to Thomas Furmston born 1830 in Oswestry to Thomas and Elizabeth Furmston. He was a confectioner in Oswestry. I can’t seem to find them on 1841, 1851 census and I can’t find Thomas & Elizabeth’s marriage. I know the surname variations happen a lot and I have tried them but no luck.
If anyone can help on this line of my tree, I would be appreciative.

Regards

There's a Thomas transcribed as Furrnston age 14 in 1841 to check out.

1851 there is a Thomas transcribed as Feimster age 23.

May not be your Thomas but worth a look.

Hello Hadyn and welcome to Rootschat

When I was young I had a good friend with that surname from that area. She had an elder sister and a brother.

I recall it being unusual but,  in my searches for ancestors, I've come across a few refs to it in the Shropshire/Denbighshire borders. I'll see if I can find any links.

Baptism record has his surname as Frumston.. I recall that was one way of pronouncing it.

I'm assuming that you have seen that father was a Baker at the time and they lived in Church street.

There's an interesting entry on the 1851 which could be Thomas senior

Green End, Wem HO207/1995/473/8
Jane Griffiths, wid, 58, house proprietor and confectioner, b. St Martins - not far from Oswestry
.....
Thomas Furmstone, widower, 48, journeyman baker, b. Ellesmere

I see that Thomas married Mary Brees in Mold on 4 Feb 1860 and they seemed to have  lived in the area until Thomas's death between 1871 and 1881 as Mary is a widow on the 1881.

Unfortunately, the 1861 census for that area are missing:

I've not found him in 1851 so far.

On FindMyPast parish records he is transcribed as Thomas Farmstone age 44 buried on 20 Nov 1874 at Mold (Bistre)Flintshire.  His address is listed as High St  which ties in well with the family address in 1871 and on the image his surname looks more like Furmstone

Possible marriage of Thomas and Elizabeth

Loppington 19 March 1829

Thomas Frumpson of the parish of Oswestry and Elizabeth Jones of this parish. ( By licence).

Suggest you look at his signature - the surname looks like Furmston to me.

Loppington is near Wem and not that far from Oswestry.
