Headstone cleaning

Is anyone able to advise me on the best way to clean this headstone?

Something that is not mentioned on the stoneletters site is many species of lichens are protected by law here in the UK, cleaning a headstone could destroy one of the many protected species.
If the stone really does not require cleaning it is best to leave well alone.

Some rare lichens are protected under the provisions of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981
(species listed on Schedule 8 ). http://www.rootschat.com/links/01por/ It is a criminal offence to remove protected lichens and you should check with the relevant national environment agency first if the lichen is protected and what license you may need to remove them. http://www.warmemorials.org/uploads/publications/254.pdf

Is the black mark in the  marble not water damage ? I don’t think much can be done about that.
