Eastville Workhouse / Baptisms
« on: Sunday 05 July 20 20:10 BST (UK) »
My grandfather was born illegitimately on 13 Sept 1908 and handed over to Eastville Workhouse by his mother.

I have just found two baptisms for him: the first at St. Thomas, Eastville Workhouse in November 1908 and a second at St. Stephen, Soundwell on 3 May 1914.

Does anyone know why he would be baptised twice and also why 6years apart?  Did St. Stephen have a particular connection with the Workhouse?

Historically, Soundwell was always in Gloucestershire, rather than Bristol.
Today it is controlled by South Gloucestershire Council.

So, perhaps a baptism in Bristol, followed later by a baptism in Gloucestershire?

Another possibility:
Maybe he had lost his baptism certificate, and needed it later?

Thanks KGarrad.  I don't know the area at all - that's interesting and i'm wondering if there was a children's home there.  Another lead to follow-up.  :)

St Stephen's church, Soundwell wasn't built until 1904. Not sure a parish existed then?

Previously Soundwell came under Downend, and before that Mangotsfield and/or Kingswood.

Probably Bristol City Record Office would be the best source of information?
They hold info for many South Gloucestershire parishes, towns and areas.

Another possibility. My grandmother was baptised by her parents, then taking into Eastville Workhouse aged 2. Later she was fostered and baptised again by the foster parents.
