Navy cap badge?
« on: Monday 06 July 20 18:36 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help to identify this cap badge please. I do know that he was involved in mine sweeping at one point in WW2. I think the photo might have been taken at the time that he joined up

A commercial company rather than military.

I'm pretty certain that is a Royal Navy Petty Officers' cap badge. A Google image search seems to confirm it.

I wonder if you can show us the rest of the photo ? It might help.

Regards.

It is a Royal Navy Chief Petty Officer's cap badge (PO had no wreath around the badge).

He would not have worn this when he joined up as CPO is a senior rate.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

It is possible that the reply I thought I’d sent in response to Alan O, SiGr & MaxD didn’t get sent (I certainly can’t see it here) so first of all my apologies, secondly (but most important) thank you. I also thought I’d sent the complete photo in response to SiGr’s request. I’m not in my study at the moment & have been using too many excuses to put off a task that’s going to take a couple of days, so when I get back to my computer I’ll find it & send it. In the meantime, as MaxD knows I’ve been writing a non-fiction book (WW2) - I was able to add the extra information about the person who was wearing the cap, (I’ve accepted the CPO explanation) & have now sent the draft manuscript to an agent - a major step forward, and a timely reminder of how helpful RootsChat has been. Now it’s ‘wait & see’
