Eleanor Simpson
« on: Tuesday 07 July 20 20:37 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am having trouble finding a baptism record for my 4x great grandmother. She was called Eleanor Simpson and married my 4x great grandfather William Bell on 12 Dec 1819 in Hexham. The census return for her and family in 1851 gives her age at 51 (therefore y.o.b circa 1800) and her place of birth as Hexham, Northumberland, England. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ryan

Is this the family in the 1841 at Lime St, All Saints Northumberland?

William Bell     40  (copperas boiler)
Eleanor Bell    40
Jane Bell         21
Sarah Bell      13
William Bell      5
H0107/846/1 pg 21

Only Sarah and son William are indicated as being born in County, and Eleanor and Jane have ticks in the column "born Scotland, Ireland or foreign parts" (as do some others on the page). I do note though that the 1851 says they were born Hexham.

I can see these baptisms for the couple (to see whether the naming helps with Eleanor's possible parents):
Jane        27 Aug 1820    Corbridge (of Prospect Hill, father: husbandman, note: "From Bishop's Transcript - Diocese of Durham."
Thomas    7 April 1822     Corbridge (of Prospect Hill, father: husbandman, note: "From Bishop's Transcript - Diocese of Durham."
William     2 Oct 1825     Longbenton (of Walker, father: labourer) - can't see a suitable burial?
Sarah      17 Mar 1829    Newcastle upon Tyne  (of Ouseburn, father: Copperas maker)
Eleanor    9 Nov 1830     Newcastle upon Tyne  (of Ouseburn, father: Copperas manufacturer)
William    21 Feb 1835    Newcastle upon Tyne  (of Ouseburn, father: Copperas Maker)

Yes, that is the family in 1841.

Maybe Eleanors mother was also called Eleanor? It is not the first time that would have happened!

Do you have a copy of the 1819 Parish Reg of the Marriage?
Eleanor would be a minor if born 1800.
Witnesses names?

I have a transcript of Hexham St. Andrew marriages with witness names.  No marriages at all in Dec 1819.  You are sure it was Hexham?  A marriage and not the beginning of bands?
Co. Durham:  Hall, Snowdon, Makepeace, Barnfather, Barrass, Gray/Grey, Wilson, Carr, Cole, Richardson, Greener, Lamb
Northumberland:  Grey/Gray, Richardson, Barnfather, Heron, Redpath

Actually the link provided by Maddy shows that there is an image but that it can only be viewed at a family history centre. The parish records for St John Lee are held by Northumberland Archives. The Bishop's Transcripts , up to 1836, are not held in Durham but in the Borthwick Institute in York. They have been digitised but again can only be viewed at a family history centre. (See Genuki- St John Lee, Northumberland Church Records).

Doing a search on Durham Records Online shows that this marriage has been transcribed on that site. This is a pay per view site but, were you to wish to find the names of witnesses to this marriage, it would I think be the most immediate way of doing so.
