Charles William Greenwood, married Johanna "Annie" O'Brien
« on: Thursday 09 July 20 10:19 BST (UK) »
I am currently trying to track down my ancestor Charles William Greenwood.
He was probably born c. 1860 in England, possibly Islington in December quarter as that's what I found on the FreeBMD site.

He married Johanna "Annie" O'Brien on the 24th of August, 1885 and had a son, Herbert "Charles" Fleming Greenwood, born 1886, died 1962 in Mildura.

I don't precisely know when or where Charles was born or died, as his wife died young (cause unknown) in 1890 and subsequently he seems to disappear off the face of the Earth.

I don't know his parents' names, but The Age 13th Dec 1890 mentions that a mother of C. Greenwood died on the 12th at South Australia, so perhaps he had more family in Australia than at first assumed.

A family tree provided by my grandparents says he may have died in Hobart, but no date is given. I have searched the Library of Tasmania website but haven't found anything yet.

Any info/help would be greatly appreciated!

HOTH would stand for the region the birth occurred e.g. HOTHAM. Not the fathers surname.

Hi all, quick update:
I contacted grandmother who says that Charles Greenwood first came to Adelaide from England, possibly North West England, apparently already married. First wife died aboard the ship, so Charles then remarried, possibly on ship.
After arriving in Adelaide, that second wife also died, and Charles subsequently married her sister in Adelaide, who then also died. At that point, the family apparently kicked him out, after which I presume he moved to Melbourne and married wife no. 4? Johanna O'Brien. After "Annie" O'Brien died in 1890, he apparently moved to Tasmania, but not much more is known of him after that. I still don't know who exactly raised son Herbert, but there was apparently a sister "Dory", but more children were probably born to other wives also.

The only Charles Greenwood arrival in Adelaide that I could find was aboard the "Earl Dalhousie" in 1875, aged 22, single, carpenter, UK Assisted Passenger I think.

If this is the same Charles Greenwood, then he was likely born c 1853.

Haven't yet found any info from his time in Tasmania, but he probably died there.

Unfortunately I still don't have wives' or parents' names yet, but it seems this story is much more bizarre than first assumed.

Thanks for all the replies so far!

I agree with you that the 2 Greenwood Death notices, one for "Annie" the wife, and one for the mother of C. GREENWOOD which appear in the same paper on the same day and together, do look to be connected.
